Outstanding Graphics
Ubisoft developed the Dunia Engine specifically for Far Cry 2. Among other things, the Dunia Engine delivers realistic, interactive environments, special effects, real-time night-and-day cycles, and smart enemy AI.

Expansive, Realistic Environment
Far Cry 2 is set in a fictional region of Africa where you are caught between two rival factions at war. The Ubisoft team spent a lot of time filming and photographing in Africa to get all the details of the landscape and native wildlife. The result is a huge gameplay area that is 50 square kilometers, taking players into and out of the jungle and savannah. Wild animals such as zebras, buffalo, gazelle are encountered during the game, with both players and enemies allowed to interact with them.

Far Cry 2 features an incredible level of detail and realism, with a minimal in-game interface to detract from immersion. For example, players will need to navigate the world using an in-game map and navigation system, weapons will disintegrate over time, and fires will spread and propagate.

Each of the actions a player takes is reflected in the environment and changes the content of the game. To fulfill your mission, you need to play the enemies against each other, using both strategy and skill.

Huge Range of Weapons and Vehicles
Far Cry 2 offers gamers a wide range of weapons, from a machete for hand-to-hand combat, to a sniper rifle that can stealthily pluck off enemies from afar. As weapons disintegrate over time, they might jam or even explode in your hand.

There are also a large range of vehicles such as gliders, trucks, cars, and boats that will let you fly, drive, slide, and hover over the open landscapes.

Multiplayer Options for up to 16 Players
Far Cry 2 supports up to 16 players and has four gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Uprising. Players can choose from six different classes in multiplayer, each with its own set of pros and cons. Just as in the single-player mode, multiplayer games will feature dynamic elements, making each session unique.

Caveat Emptor
BEFORE you purchase this game BE VERY careful and read the Ubisoft forums to see if you find problems (and trust me there are a number) with running the game. Don't worry about the "minimum" and "recommended" portions of the game box. There are STILL a ton of issues that will keep you from even running the game.

I just received Fallout 3, along with its add-on The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage, Far Cry 2, and Neverwinters Night Gold, plus an expansion. Neverwinter is the oldest of these 3 games and is the only one that I can get working :( and I exceed the "recommended" configuration by quite a margin. The problem, if you purchase from Amazon, is, once the package is open, you can not return it. Obviously creating quite a dilemma since you won't know if it does or doesn't run until you've OPENed it, installed it, and tried to run it.

In fairness to Amazon and in the spirit of full disclosure, I contacted them once Fallout 3 wouldn't run, and all efforts (i.e., forums, tech support, etc.) to find a solution had failed, they "made an exception in this one case." Problem is, once I installed and tried to run Far Cry it too would not run for whatever reason so best case, I'm out the .

Aside from the suggestion to make sure as much as possible you know what gotchas might be involved with a game, I'd suggest, if it's not terribly inconvenient, to buy from a local store. I should have made all my purchases at a local nationwide chain which has a "no questions asked" return policy. In the case of games, movies, and the like they won't refund the purchase amount, since there is too much chance for abuse, but they will give you an in store credit. If nothing else that's money you can use to fill out your Xmas list.

Complete Junk - Don't Buy This, Don't Even Play it if it's Free
I had really high hopes for this game. Loved the original Far Cry, and usually like Ubi games. However, Far Cry 2 is a product of lazy design, and seemingly no testing. The design is pretty bad in may respects (e.g. nearly instantly respawning enemy guard posts that become plain annoying after a short while), but the really unforgivable thing is that the game has several game-breaking bugs that are known issues which hit most players, and Ubi will not issue a patch.

Don't waste your time or money with this.

Pretty Good
This is a pretty good game, but not great. Game play is a little repetitive as random enemy get respawned in this open world as soon as you leave a mini-area and the missions are broken down into 4 basic types delineated by different symbols on the map. Travel is this open world gets old, as quick travel points are a little out of the way. This is a realistic look into FPS gaming compared to others on the market.

Pros: Interesting main missions, great landscape, love the sound of the weapons, love the overall "merc in africa" concept.
Cons: Repetitive travel and side missions

FARCRY2
Great game, the AI is smart, the scenery is spectacular. Takes place in Africa. all around fun for the mature audience. Highly recommended for FPS lovers.

A Failure of the Imagination
This game lacks subtlety and the drive of a creative imagination behind its development. Other games such as Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV leave this game behind in both style and substance. Far Cry 2 is just a hair's breadth away from being a cookie cutter game. The many pitfalls present in the game have been covered by other reviewers far better than I can present them, but the bottom line is that a game should be fun and not aggravating. There is a fine line between challenge and annoyance and Far Cry 2 (much like Assassin's Creed) hits the player over the head with heavy handedness instead of anything approaching the refined and highly enjoyable experience a video game can, and should, be. Quite a disappointment, though pretty to look at.
